Vo 1935 aa het d Holiday mit em Teddy Wilson e Hufe Songs ufgnoo, wo dennzumol populär gsi si und sä zu Dschäässtandards gmacht. Au dr Lester Young het vilmol mit ere musiziert und die bäide si gueti Fründ worde. 1937 het si bim Count Basie gsunge, si häi sich aber scho im Joor druf verstritte. Si isch zum Artie Shaw gange und isch äini vo de erste schwarze Dschäässängere gsi, wo mit wisse Musiker ufdräte isch. 1939 het si zum erste Mol dr Song Strange Fruit gsunge, wo s Thema von em d Lynchjustiz an Schwarze gsi isch. Vo 1944 aa isch si immer wider emol vo Striicher begläitet worde.[1] 1947 isch si wägen em Bsitz vo Droge in s Gfängnis choo. Wider dusse isch si bald druf mit groossem Erfolg in dr Carnegie-Hall ufdräte. Vo denn aa het si immer wider Broblem mit Drooge ghaa. 1956 isch iiri Autobiografii Lady Sings the Blues erschiine.

Am 31. Mai 1959 isch si ins Metropolitan Hospital iigliiferet worde und isch dört gstorbe, wääred Boliziste am Chrankebett gstande si, zum sä wäge Droogebsitz z verhafte.
