Im Hindergrund vo däm Begriff stoht im Cooley si bsundrigi Uffassig vo dr soziale Natur vom Mensch. D Gsellschaft isch für e Cooley e mentali Organisationswiis vo Individue; er lähnt es as künstlig ab, s Individuum und d Gsellschaft begrifflig enander gegenüberzstelle.[2]
